How common is PTSD in adults?
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can occur after any traumatic, dangerous, and shocking event. Going through trauma is not rare. In fact, about 6 out of 10 men (60%) and 5 out of 10 women (50%) will experience at least one traumatic event in their lifetime.

The following statistics are based on the U.S. population:
- About 7-8% of the population will experience PTSD at some point in their life
- About 8.6 million individuals age 18-64 have a diagnosis of PTSD
- 78% of those with a diagnosis will experience depression at some point in their life
- Nearly 300,000 veterans who have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan are currently suffering from PTSD
